The eras. Each era is a group of official series, not a range of years, so every card belongs to exactly one. English cards only for now; Japanese vintage starts in 1996.
The basket. 10 fixed raw cards per era: 3 grails, 4 fan favourites, 3 affordable staples. Every card sold at least 12 times near mint in the past year, so one sale cannot swing an index. The list is public and only changes on a published date.
The math. Equal weighted: 1,000 × the average of each card's price today ÷ its price on the base date, so a $2,000 card and a $20 card count the same. A missing price carries forward for up to 3 days, never longer, and nothing is estimated.
The prices. TCGplayer market price for the exact printing, near mint, in US dollars, read once a day. History before the daily reads began comes from TCGplayer's weekly price history.
